Desktop Remote Access
Kids today…. think they know everything etc. - and while they are off with their latest gadget that allows internet roaming, some iPodPhone thing or other, and they rack up vast phone bills finding out about Britney Spears, what are we ancient business types going to do? Sometimes you do need your own disk drive at your fingertips with a little more information than the average gadget memory.
Today’s site addresses that need - RemotePC remote access to your own desktop… or indeed laptop. All you need is to be somewhere there’s an internet connection.
Of the various features and functions, security is taken care of by an SSL connection and your host device doesn’t need a static IP address. You can upload and download file transfers and print stuff out from your host device to your temporary location. Also, you can go the RESTful way, directly from a local internet browser, via the RemotePC website, to access your own computer back home.
In terms of collaboration, RemotePC allows invitations to third parties; it would be quite possible to use this to offer support and training on any packages you might be supplying. (The number of people I have to painfully drag through the osCommerce administration panel…) In addition, their Remote Meeting service allows up to ten different users on a single desktop.
The payment gateway appears to be by credit card only, which may affect non-US citizens, without US dollar accounts, the exchange rates on a credit card can be tough - but the basic package is priced at $4.95 for a single host computer (with a 30-day free trial) - or you can go for the premium deal, three hosts for $9.95 - which, either way, is a lot cheaper than the standard kiddies’ gadget these days…
