Keep it simple - KIS - is fairly obviously good advice for any WordPress theme builder.
Keep it universal - there are a lot of people out there, running all kinds of different system, doing different and strange things with the files, any complexity is increasing the risk of breaking the theme for them…

The great war, and be in absolutely no doubt that it is a war, between Google and Microsoft is based on a simple divide - is it better to work, edit, store online or on the desktop. Through the 90’s this question was very clearly answered - Microsoft held the upper hand, work on the desktop and send it to the internet was the only sensible way to go. Then fast connections, broadband, arrived and everything changed - suddenly one did not have to sit there twiddling thumbs and watching a progress bar as a huge 1MB file was ponderously uploaded. And now Google is in pole position…
So the advantage of online storage and indeed access, becomes obvious - of the major competitors in this market, IDrive - Online Backup is now actively marketing in the UK - providing the usual 2GB storage of docs, photos, media files for free, and a two-tier paid plan divided by personal and business use. It should be noted that the personal unlimited storage option is subject to the usual caveat of “fair use” - and do bear in mind the other usual factor, online subscription can involve credit cards and automated debits.

A security plug-in to put the admin and login under SSL - interesting and probably not before time as an option.
Of course, you will need SSL on your domain, but certificates don’t cost anything like they used to, it’s just the fun of installing them hasn’t changed…
You want alternating backgrounds for posts down the page, or alternately styled table rows, or alternating anything - you need to test whether something is odd or even.
